Abstract
Black spots on some pieces of Etruscan and Egyptian pottery were identified as manganese dioxide. They probably arose from the activity of manganese-oxidizing microorganisms such as Arthrobacter and Pseudomonas during burial. They may be removed by the use of mercaptoacetic acid or of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in 1M HC1.
