Describes an invesligation into the use of x-ray fluorescence analysis, in conjunction with discriminant analysis, in the characterization of groups of mounted, flat-polished garnets which occur frequently as decoration on Dark Age metalwork. A primary objective was to compare such groups from the Sutton Hoo ship burial with material from other European contexts.
