Abstract
Newly unearthed relics are generally kept in a closed, highly humid environment in order to maintain them as close to their original states as possible. In such an environment, change in the outside temperature can cause condensation and staining on the one hand, or drying and cracking on the other. Under high humidity, Nikka-pellets, which are conventionally used as a humidity controlling agent, absorb so much water they crumble; and humidity controlling paper comprised of Nikka-pellets blended with japanese paper is apt to tear so easily that it is difficult to handle. The author found that flax xylem is excellent for controlling humidity and does not disintegrate under high humidity, but it fails to respond to rapid temperature change. Combining flax xylem with tissue paper, which quickly responds to temperature change, showed that the use of 20 grams of flax xylem and 10 grams of tissue paper made it possible to keep the relative humidity (RH) of a closed 10 liter vessel between 82 and 85% RH with very little fluctuation in humidity for only a short period of time when the temperature was rapidly raised or lowered between 10°C and 40°C.
