Maps, drawn or based on photographs, are one of the most important means of documentation in field archaeology. A turret for vertical archaeological photography, designed here in the late 1940's, is still used in an improved version at most excavations in Sweden. This method has, however, become somewhat expensive and various other means of taking vertical photographs from the air have been tried. Experiments with model airplanes and model helicopters have shown different disadvantages, e.g. the motor vibrations proved difficult to avoid. In some cases a skylift is a solution, but under normal circumstances, in investigations covering 5001000 square meters, photography with an automatic camera in a turret is still preferable. -- AATA
