The influence of surface condition, environmental media, and surface coatings on the fatigue lifetime of polystyrene specimens has been explored. It is shown that surface flaws such as machining marks, are much more detrimental to fatigue lifetime than to static strength. The effect of alcohols on fatigue lifetime is primarily one of plasticization rather than of molecular size and mobility. -- AATA
