Abstract
The author cautions that most damage is done to sub-fossil bones and teeth by the drying of the finds prior to treatment and advocates rewetting certain bones before consolidation. He found that solution and dispersion consolidants (he tested PVAs) when introduced into still wet finds are often unable to prevent cracking. For small wet finds that can withstand a vacuum of 25 mbar and the bubbles thus generated he advocates his procedure using an epoxy: Ruetapox Resin 0614 with hardeners LC and ABS 3; a controlled temperature method which seals in a certain amount of water. A prior 1% potash lye bath may soften bone enough to allow cracks to be bound shut. For large or very friable wet finds he recommends controlled temperature treatment with PEG (Polywachs 6, 000-12,000): at normal pressure for very friable finds, otherwise in a vacuum. He cautions that treatment may not be interrupted before complete replacement of water by PEG has taken place, and that PEG treated finds remain sensitive to water and heat and thus need careful storage. Dry material, not in danger of cracking, may be consolidated under vacuum with a heat curing polyester resin. A silicone rubber skin may be used to protect the bone surfaces from the resin. Methods for removing excess consolidants and for mending variously treated finds are given. Some success has been achieved in the return of dried out material to its (moist and plastic) condition when found. A cracked tooth was slowly re-wetted in a sandbox then held under running water and finally placed in a 1% potash lye solution whereby the tooth expanded and the cracks closed. However, cracks occuring in situ may have been consolidated by ground water minerals. No find should be re-wetted by any method until it has been tested: acetone is dropped onto a controlled area and cracking sounds or apparent delamination signify that the object is best left untreated until new methods have been developed -- AATA
