In the past wall painting fragments have been placed in plaster of paris mounts, which can be a source of soluble salts. Salts are responsible for extensive damage to paint layers. The application of resins in recent years to treat the problems have sometimes contributed to the damage. In 1985 a program of conservation was started at the British Museum, London, to explore new methods and materials of remounting.
