The work of the Mary Rose Trust Laboratory at Portsmouth on conserving the large number of objects -- both ship timbers and artifacts, including shoes and arrows associated with the neck -- is described. Passive holding operations for the wooden objects were found inadequate; an active program of cascade washing to remove salts, followed by EDTA treatment and PEG 3400 impregnation, was instituted. An alternative to PEG in use at the laboratory is mannitolimpregnation, which reduces treatment time from five months to ten days. Leather is treated by oxalic acid wash followed by impregnation with 10% Asak 5205 Baron. Freeze-drying techniques are also described. -- AATA
