Abstract
Designed for the non-specialist in basketry conservation, this revised edition (see AATA 18-792 for first edition) details simplified treatments which can be carried out by individuals or museums which do not have conservation facilities. Varieties of weaving techniques are touched upon and illustrated. Preventive measures are stressed as the first step in conservation, including protection from physical damage, ultraviolet radiation, heat, excessive dryness, excessive humidity, dust and airborne chemical pollutants, and crowded or non-supportive storage. Specific conservation treatments deal with cleaning, stains, reshaping, mending coating with a protective substance, fumigation, and record keeping. Appendices include comments on mats, packing, sources for materials. -- AATA
