The use of dilute solutions of ethanolamine thioglycollate (ETG) in alcohol (ethanol and isopropanol) is recommended as a safe altemative to ammonia or morpholine treatment for the neutralization of oxidized pyrite in fossils. ETG also removes liberated iron salts by chelation, thus leaving no red or brown discoloration on treated fossils as occurred with earlier methods. ETG is alkaline and therefore safe to use on calcareous specimens. The use of ETG in sepiolite poultices for treating large oxidizing pyritic specimens is also described. -- AATA
