Abstract
About half of the 13,000 bridges in the US Forest Service transport system have wood as a major structural component. Reasons are put forward for using wood in favor of competitive materials. Inspection procedures to detect decay and conditions conducive to decay are discussed together with suitable preservative treatments. A method for determining strength loss due to decay is described. The maintenance of timber bridges is discussed and examples of rehabilitation (major restoration) of deteriorated and substandard bridges are described.
