Exposure of rats to atmospheres containing white spirit at on average 214 milligrams per cubic meter, four hours per day for consecutive days caused irritation of upper respiratory tract membranes and histopathological changes in the nasal cavity, trachea, and larynx. Hence, exposure of man to white spirit at or around the threshold limit value for Stoddard solvent which has been adopted for white spirit (100 parts per million 525 milligrams per cubic meter) may result in irritation of the upper respiratory tract. -- AATA
