Abstract
A review of the problems of chemical analysis in the study of ancient mortars (especially Roman provincial mortars). The author gives an account of methods used and results obtained from published literature and from his own experiments. The main constituents of mortars (aggregate and lime) and the ratios of mixing are reviewed. See also AATA 19-1792.
