Abstract
An 18th-century book is described that will be the first item in an archive of examples for different conservation treatments. Each sheet of every section has been treated according to a different method that is standard in conservation workshops. The methods used include washing; washing in alkalinized water; deacidification with Ca(OH) 2; deacidification with Mg(HCO 3) 2; and aqueous light-bleaching under ultraviolet (UV) filtering glass, with Mg(HCO 3) 2, and under UV filtering glass. First results, mainly color changes, are reported. One set of the treated sheets will be preserved at 20±1°C and 50±5% relative humidity and the other at ca. 18±20°C and 60±30% relative humidity. Both will be inspected at repeated intervals.
