Abstract
In 1972 the Research Council Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation organized a special committee to study, inventory, and selectively preserve historic structures associated with road and bridge building in Virginia. Details of the inventory of metal truss bridges in Virginia are reported together with the techniques developed to evaluate the significance of each structure. The evaluation is divided into three broad categories, namely: documentation (age and builder); technological significance (technology and geometrics); and environmental (aesthetics, history, and integrity). Specific examples are cited and the results of the entire evaluation are presented in tabular form.
