Abstract
During the first 40 years of construction, numerous architects were consulted in the design of the Albany (New York) state capitol building. Richardson's work on the Senate Chamber is briefly outlined; in 1883 Grover Cleveland, then incumbent governor, stopped this work for budgetary reasons. In the last one-hundred years, changes were made to accommodate modernization and tastes in fashion, but little maintenance was done. In 1978 a restoration effort was undertaken to recreate the Richardson design. The stone carving on the overdoor panels, which had never been done, was executed based on an original sketch by Richardson. No decision was reached about the carving of the fireplace overmantels although the drawings for these survive. The restoration is of artistic as well as historical value. -- AATA
