Abstract
Problems often found with garden sculpture are introduced, including the effects of lichen, moss, algae, rising damp, and iron supports. Treatments are presented: creating barriers against rising damp, the use of polyester resins instead of cement or mortar, lime poultices for marble, metal peening with glass beads for bronze, and more. Protective enclosures for covering garden sculpture in the winter are presented, including the uses of black polyethylene, wooden boxes, and aluminum boxes. There is discussion about the statement by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings advocating a ten year moratorium on the use of silanes. -- AATA
