The new Chemical Abstracts (CA) Patent Index, which began in January 1981, was initiated as a result of the increase in patent literature, the great technological expansion of the sixties, and the signing of an agreement between CA and the International Patent Documentation Centre. The background to the Agreement, its application as a quicker access route, and the Patent Index are described. -- AATA
