Air cleaners are of three types: 1) The fan/filter systems; 2) Electrostatic precipitators; and 3) The negative-ion generators. Consumer Reports magazine staff have analyzed the various brands and types of air cleaners and rated their overall quality, based primarily on tests for removal of tobacco smoke from the air. None was effective at removing gaseous pollutants such as formaldehyde.
