This article describes deterioration of paper with a preface on old atomic theory. The following topics are discussed in relation to paper: Cellulose; acid deterioration; alkaline buffers; degradation by light; oxidation; enzyme degradation mechanical damage; specification for archival needs; and, lig-free type 1 and II.
