Starch and starch derivatives are used by the textile industry in four general areas: a) as a size to strength warp yarns and improve their resistance to abrasion during weaving, b) in finishing, to change the hand and appearance of fabric after it is bleached, dyed, or printed, c) in printing, to increase the consistency of printing pastes, and d) as a component in finishes to glaze and polish sewing thread. This article discusses in great length the properties and uses of various sizes as used in the textile industry.
