Abstract
Concern regarding the deterioration of medieval seals led to attempts to determine their composition. Initial analyses showed them to be complex mixtures. Two were identified as being of beeswax, virtually unaltered from the composition of a modern beeswax. A later seal showed a mixture of beeswax with a resin, probably colophony.
