At Christmas 1974, the City of Darwin was destroyed by Cyclone Tracy. This article describes the damage done to the main gallery and offices of the museum and the attempt during the three weeks immediately following the cyclone, to rescue the art and ethnographic collection and minimize the effects of water damage and mold growth until the arrival of trained personnel with materials and equipment for the tasks of conservation.
