The introduction discusses a number of factors which should be taken into account when considering rebinding. Boxing and the concept of limp vellum binding developed by C. Clarkson are also mentioned. The following procedural steps in use at the Newberry Library for the conservation binding of a 17th century book are discussed in some detail: 1) documentation 2) surface cleaning 3) disbinding 4) washing 5) deacidification 6) mending 7) rebinding.
