Project: Heritage Restored is a coordinated series of programs aimed at recovering, preserving, investigating, and interpreting artifacts of the American Revolution from the wreckage of American vessels sunk in Maine's Penobscot River. During the summer of 1976, a coordinated program was begun to recover and preserve artifacts from the privateer DEFENCE. During the autumn of 1976, equipment was installed in the Maine State Museum's new object conservation facility. Several modifications of existing treatments and new materials are being tested. The motivation of the laboratory organizers was to provide conservation within a limited budget, and made the laboratory as flexible as possible.
