Abstract
The oxidative degradations of three types of paper were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA). For each case, an activation energy of about 34 kcal/mol was found for the first oxidation exotherm. The DTA kinetic values were able to predict the degree of reaction of experimentally aged samples with good accuracy. The observed oxidative stability of the papers agreed with their ranking by Library of Congress oven aging/ folding endurance tests. The Arrhenius kinetic values for a paper were easily determined within a day with a precision of ± 2% standard deviation for the activation energy. See also AATA 15-389.
