Abstract
The restoration of the poplar and walnut doors (15th-16th centuries) of the cathedral of Borgo Sansepolcro, Tuscany, carried out as a teaching activity by the Anghiari State Art Institute, involved restructuring the load-bearing elements and recovering the sculptures and carvings. Some infilling was carried out for aesthetic reasons. Turpentine was used to remove a bituminous patina. New wood elements were fixed with stabilized Redivil glue, as well as keys. The framing elements were cleaned with a 2:1 turpentine mixture and aqueous ammonia solution. Xylamon was used as a biocide and Paraloid B-72 as a consolidant. Bronze ferrules were inserted into the hinges, which were protected with linseed oil, beeswax, and turpentine.
