Abstract
The complexity of legal issues raised by claims by foreign governments, churches, or individuals, for restitution of property vary from clear-cut instances where well-documented material was stolen, to thorny tangles regarding the trade in illicit and unreported archaeological finds. Using a few, fairly well-known examples, the issue is debated and recommendations presented.
