Gore-Tex® fabric is composed of a microporous polytetrafluoroethylene membrane laminated to a shell fabric and lined with an appropriate material. The pores in Gore-Tex® are 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times larger than a water molecule. Therefore, the membrane can differentiate between a water droplet and water vapor. This provides a waterproof fabric that is breathable, allowing natural body moisture to escape, thereby increasing wearer comfort. The proper cleaning and handling of Gore-Tex® fabrics, including procedures for spotting, dry cleaning, wet cleaning, and finishing are outlined. Special cleaning problems associated with Gore-Tex® fabrics are outlined.
