Although little valued until the 1950s, Armenian woven carpets have a rich tradition. Their original name was <i>karpet</i>. The weaving techniques and the degree of craftsmanship in woven carpets vary. The simplest type of woven fabric is called <i>mezar</i>. More complicated kilims include <i>jimjims</i>, <i>sumaks</i>, and a kind of sumak called <i>sileh</i>. They are usually made of wool or, rarely, of silk. Their colorful motifs often appear to have been embroidered, and some actually have been embroidered.
