Identification of vegetable tannin types through spot tests are tried on reference compounds (chemicals), tannin extracts and leathers. This paper deals with and evaluates the ferric test for identification of vegetable tannins and the vanillin test for identification of condensed tannins. Furthermore, a third spot test (the rhodanine spot test) is developed for identification of hydrolysable gallo tannins. The results are evaluated through visual observation and for some samples compared with HPLC. This work shows that the spot tests are useful to control the quality of new restoration leathers, but shows to be less significant applied to deteriorated leathers. -- SCMRE
