The treatment of a Renaissance leather and wood ceremonial shield from a private collection in Milan provided an invaluable opportunity to study the techniques employed to construct and decorate a type of object which is little studied and essentially ignored in the principal technical sources. A series of analyses, aimed at evaluating the condition of the shield, formed the basis for the choice of methods used to stabilize the leather covering, while the treatment employed respected various modifications and additions made to the shield in an earlier restoration in accordance with the system used in displaying the collection.
