Abstract
A gilt leather wall-hanging, dated 1680 and restored in 1924, is covered with a thick, glossy varnish. A research programme was set up to study the possibility of removing the varnish. The varnish was identified as a linseed alkyd resin. Tests were performed to remove the varnish. Taking into account the large surface to be treated, the best way to remove the alkyd resin proved to be the strappo method with Scotch tape, after softening the resin. Before and after the treatments, samples were taken to study possible effects on the surface layers. -- SCMRE
