The museum housed in Luneville Castle possesses a fine representation of the meeting of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. It is depicted on a so-called gilt leather wall-hanging, which is painted and stamped. The recently restored hanging is one of a series of three dating from the middle of the 17th century and representing Biblical scenes. A study of the technical details documented during this work revealed information on the manufacturing process. The following paper describes the gilt leather technique according to bibliographical sources, and compares it with observations made on the Luneville hanging. The various observations will be detailed, as well as their implications for the choice of restoration procedures.
