Abstract
In temperatures above 300 degrees C, polonium precipitated on silver has a noticeable mobility on the surface that rapidly increases with the temperature without penetrating to the inside. Concerning the type of the linkage the polonium atoms have to the surface, the behavior in the electrical field seemed of interest. Experiments with thin, pure silver wires coated with polonium in places showed migration to the anode. Thermal diffusion in the direction of the cathode is completely suppressed with field strengths of 0.1 volt/cm. The position of polonium in the periodic table agrees with the migration to the anode. The migration phenomenon is extremely sensitive to changes on the surface such as etching and to minute impurities, so that valuable information can be expected from observation of the phenomena for the purpose of surface research.
