Abstract
The authors describe chromatography using a solvent for the organic phase of 5 cc water 4 cc N-Butanol and 1 cc acetic acid to which they added 1 cc glycol per 10 cc of mixture. The usual apparatus was used at a constant temperature of 20 degrees C. The paper has to be completely free of iron. One-half percent ferric chloride in methanol is used for visualization of the unknown substance. In concentrations of 0.05% or over clearly visible dots of blue color appear which may fade with time but do not disappear completely. Other solvents are also discussed. A table of results with natural tanning substances is included with comparison to other chromatographic methods.
