Abstract
Describes work done at the Museum for Maritime Archaeology at Ketelhaven, The Netherlands, toward development of new processes for conservation of slightly degraded waterlogged oak. One process utilizes tertiary butanol as a dehydration agent, followed by impregnation with polyethylene glycol 4000 with tertiary butanol/ water as the solvent, shrinkages of 4. 5% tangential, 3. 2% radial and. 8% longitudinal were noted in european oak following processing by this method. Also discusses air-drying under controlled conditions for wood which is only slightly deteriorated, with shrinkage comparable to new wood and slight surface cracking noted.
