Processes used for the production of iron gall inks are presented and some methods for the regeneration of these inks are given. Accounts are also given about experiments for regenerating iron gall inks by using ammonium sulfide or fermented gallic tincture. The influence of the chemicals on the paper was also examined by artificial ageing tests. The experiments proved that ammonium sulfide is not well suited for regenerating documents with faded type. A 20% fermented gallic tincture followed by a treatment with potassium hydroxide and dipping the document in a 1% acetic acid solution is recommended. The importance of rinsing the documents is noted. -- AATA
