The provenance of the 12 18th-century sumptuous chairs, padded and upholstered with embroidered panels is first indicated. The wood used is carved ebony and boxwood. The silk and wool embroidered motives are then described stylistically and illustrated. Drawings show where patches had been cut out or added on in support of the hypothesis that the same seat covers had originally been created for use on differently shaped armchairs. The state of conservation of the seat covers is noted as affected by the tension produced by the embroidery, weakening and losses due to normal wear and tear and insect attacks, and age old dust. The conservation treatment is detailed and involved cleaning (dusting and washing), finding solutions to functional and aesthetic problems with special attention paid to techniques of filling the losses, re-assembling, and the selecting of a transparent protective cover for the seats. -- AATA
