Abstract
The use of ethylene oxide to disinfect textiles previously treated with sodium pentachlorophenate provoked an exothermic reaction between the pentachlorophenate and the ethylene oxide. This reaction was probably initiated by another equally exothermic reaction between the ethylene oxide and the metallic mordants used to dye a silk dress. It seemingly was reactivated when the dress was air rinsed after disinfection. The reaction could probably have been considerably reduced 1. if the ethylene oxide concentration had been around 125 grams per cubic meter, 2. if the gas used for treatment and rinsing had been inert, and 3. if the objects had not been confined in packing-cases. -- AATA
