The members were treated by applying dilute raw lacquer to the lacquer surface to strengthen the priming layers. Missing parts of lacquer layers were repaired first by adhering sheets of hemp cloth in bias across them with <i>mugi-urushi (lacquer mixed with starch). Then two coats of <irushi-jinoko (lacquer mixed with chamotte) were applied on the surface to cover the new pieces of mother-of-pearl put on the hemp cloth. The lower coat consists of a rough <irushi-jinoko and the upper coat is a slightly finer one. After the coats had completely dried, the surface was burnished with whetstone, and then two more coats of lacquer were applied. <i>Maki-e lacquering was applied after burnishing the surface again.
