Twelve Pleistocene bones from the Rancho La Brea tar pits indicated the presence of collagen and its relation to the apatite matrix when ultrathin sections were examined by electron microscopy. It was possible to observe both the individual apatite crystallites and the collagen and other organic materials that were still present in fossil bone. -- CAL
