Yellow pigments used in antiquity include: yellow ochre, river ochre, litharge and massicot, orpiment, perhaps sulfur, and powdered gold. Yellow ochre, a native mineral pigment, is seen in prehistoric cave paintings. River ochre was gathered from the beds of certain streams rich in iron deposits. Litharge, obtained from plubiferous sand or as a by-product of silver and lead, was not distinguished from massicot by the ancients. Orpiment is mentioned in Pliny; Cennini called it risalgallo (mineral yellow). The ancients also used yellow vegetable dyes extracted from yellow lake, quercitron and weld.
