Exploratory Meeting to Consider the Effect of Light on Museum Objects
Abstract
The agenda of this report includes an assessment of the extent of the problem of light in the gallery and areas requiring investigation. A bibliography of some relevant studies as well as identification of sources of radiation and categories of deterioration are given. Appended information includes classification of pigments with respect to lightfastness, relative energy distribution of daylight fluorescent lamps, percentage light transmission as a function of wavelength of different materials and percentage of fading of dyes as a function of moisture of cotton, wool and silk. The research program instituted by the Mellon Institute continues to expand. Further research into the embrittlement of textiles and a general review of the subject is planned. This is a document that examines the effect of light on the degradation of works of art and artifacts. -- CCI
