This paper will discuss conservation of eight large embroidered panels by Arthur Bispo do Rosario. The panels were to part of the huge Rediscovery Exhibition in Sao Paulo to celebrate Brazil’s 500th anniversary and work was carried out in Rio de Janeiro around Carnival 2000, a few weeks before the opening. The panels are extremely fragile, not only due to previous repairs that caused the colours to fade and the textiles to weaken and shrink, leading to distortion and tears. Time constraints meant the main challenge was to make them safe to endure exhibition and traveling. The accomplishment of the work was achieved due to proper and careful planning, outlined here.
