Abstract
A collection of organic artifacts was found inside a stone container deposited as an offering in the archaeological site of Templo Mayor, Mexico. The wooden artifacts are small painted masts and false vessels. Some routine analyses were carried out to obtain information about the wood and paint. The deterioration level of the artifacts was determined to be intermediate to low; the conservators selected the Lactitol [registered mark] treatment proposed by Morgos and Imazu (1996) to assure dimensional stability and the preservation of chromatic qualities. The initial concentration was 5% and was mixed with a biocide to prevent new biological activity. The concentration of artificial sugar was gradually increased in 5% increments at room temperature until it reached 55%. Later, the temperature was rasied to 70[degree]C to achieve a concentration of 80%. The total procedure took eight months for the whole collection. After consolidation, the objects dried at room conditions. Later, the objects were cleaned to eliminate surface deposits.
