A strategic plan for the preservation of motion picture films stored at the Danish Film Archive was formulated. The plan was based on a condition survey combined with analysis of the storage climate, and was produced in co-operation with the IPI. The condition survey demonstrated that the oldest part of the film collection, that on cellulose nitrate supports, suffered most from chemical decay and physical damage. Analysis of the storage climate predicted a life expectancy of 75 years for fresh film but less than 15 for films already decaying. In 2000 new storage facilities for part of the collection were constructed, increasing life expectancy to 500 years for fresh films and to 200 years for decaying films. Conclusions drawn from the survey indicated that creating a storage environment of -5[degree]C and 30% RH would increase the life expectancy of decaying films from 10 to 500 years.
