Abstract
The very narrow width of fruitful land on both shores of the Nile forced the pre- and early historical population of Nubia to bury their dead in the desert bordering these lands. Embedding in desert sands preserved the skeletons in remarkably good condition. However, the permanent and strong influence of the sun caused a high degree of drying up of the bones, especially on those not buried very deeply. Anthropologists, members of the Austrian digging expedition in 1961-65 in the district of Sayala, Egyptian- Nubia, found these conditions. To avoid damage to the skeletons during transportation, bone hardening was carried out in the field. Glutolin and water were used in a 20 to 30 minute dunking process and following drying out. This proved to be a very successful process. However, the above procedure used on skeletons from Tell ed Dab'A in lower Egypt was not satisfactory. The reason being that the skeletons were embedded in the mud of the Nile and in cultural stratums affected by ground water. The bones had the tendency to decay. In spite of various experiments with Glutelin, unsuccessful as they were, it was decided to use the method in practice with European diggings, but modified to the Egyptian climate. Already in 1934, H. Plenderleith had recommended the use of polymeric materials. Due to difficulties in procurement and transportation, only Movicoll, PVH and Mowilith 50 were taken along from Vienna. Movicoll diluted in water was very successful, but the drying process took too long. Therefore, Mowilith 50, to be diluted in alcohol was used. This turned out tremendously successful, took less time, and the bones did not have to dry completely to be hardened satisfactorily. This method enabled the group to deal with a large amount of skeletons on a continuous basis in a comparatively short period of time, all in contrast to the first method. Undoubtedly, this procedure proven in Tell ed Dab'A is very usable with human and animal skeletons in Europe.
