Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion or Santa Clara Convent in Xativa was founded in 1325 by Dona Suarina de Entenza, widow of Roger de Lauria, thanks to a concession from Jaume II and a Papal bull issued in Agignon by Juan XXII, built outside the walls and ruined after the Union fire in 1348. It was demolished in 1359 and moved inside the wall in 1364. The church was renovated in the late 17th century and the roofs were replaced, the structural system being changed in the mid-18th century. Dynamited in 1936, the only remaining part of the historical building is the Church, the refectory, the kitchen, the sacristy and the dormitories. Decree 136/2003 had it declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Since 2007 preliminary studies have been made as part of the project for restoration of the convent, in which an interdisciplinary team has been involved. This has allowed in-depth knowledge of the monument to be gained as a background for its restoration. Archaeological, architectural survey and documentary research work have all been done to identify heritage items of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, determining the approached for action in the project for restoration and recovery of its value. The results presented in this study correspond to a first stage in the project, and should not be considered definitive, as these are subject to review.
