We have long felt that an analysis of typical tool failures would offer a practical approach towards improving the batting average of men concerned with tools – whether in designing, manufacturing, treating, grinding or use. This handbook analyzes 107 typical tool failures, tracing each one to its initial cause. The failures studied are classified into five chapters, each of which illustrates and discusses typical shortcomings in one or more of the five essentials of successful toolmaking.
